some perennial plants that make nice additions to the garden but are usually
difficult to find at a mail order nursery. While
most of these perennials do not attract butterflies or hummingbirds, they are
garden-worthy and definitely on our list of attractive plants.
When available, we offer these perennials here: Persicaria (Knotweed), Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian Sage), Phlox paniculata (Garden Phlox), Phlox paniculata 'Blue Paradise', Phlox paniculata 'David', Physostegia virginiana (Obedient Plant), Polemonium (Jacob's Ladder), Platycodon grandiflorus (Balloon Flower), Rodgersia (Roger's Flower), Rudbeckia hirta (Gloriosa Daisy), Rudbeckia triloba (Brown-eyed Susan), Sedum (Stonecrop), and Veronica longifolia 'Eveline' (Speedwell).

We ship May thru October. Most of our perennials are shipped in 3" to 4" pots.
A few may be shipped bare root. Most should bloom this summer.
Unless otherwise noted, the plants on this page prefer full sun.

|Giant Fleeceflower (aka
Giant Knotweed) (Persicaria
This gigantic perennial produces huge showy, astilbe-like plumes June thru July. Towering at 48" - 60" high, it prefers moist soil but will tolerate drier soil if grown in part shade instead of in full sun. Giant Fleeceflower generally spreads, eventually, to a diameter of 48" wide and thus, makes a great specimen plant. Deer resistant. Highly recommended by Rose Franklin.

Growing 30"-42" high, Russian Sage produces airy spikes of tiny lavender-blue flowers July thru August. A highly sought perennial, Russian Sage is deer resistant and heat and drought tolerant.

(Phlox paniculata 'Blue Paradise')
'Blue Paradise Garden Phlox grows 24"-36" high and blooms July thru August. Its flower heads appear to be blue in the morning but look lavender in late afternoon and evening. Mildew resistant. Deer resistant. A nectar source for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.

|'Norah Leigh' Garden Phlox
(Phlox paniculata 'Norah Leigh')
Beautiful variegated leaves and high mildew resistance make 'Norah Leigh' one of the best garden Phloxes. It grows 30"-36" high and generally blooms July thru August. An attractive plant even before it blooms, it produces clusters of pink/white flower heads Deer resistant. A nectar source for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Good mildew resistance and highly recommended by Rose Franklin.

| 'Party Punch' Garden Phlox
paniculata 'Party Punch')
Maturing at just 24"-30" high, this Garden Phlox electrifies the flower border with fragrant flowers of bright pink. Blooms June thru July. Deer resistant and drought tolerant. A nectar source for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds---the reason this plant is listed on the 'Butterfly Nectar Plants' page too.

'Purple Rain' Jacob's Ladder
(Polemonium yazoense 'Purple Rain')
Growing 20"-28" high,
'Purple Rain' Jacob's Ladder produces violet flowers over dark, fern-like
foliage. It prefers semi shade and will usually rebloom if spent flowers
|Variegated Jacob's Ladder
(Polemonium reptans 'Stairway to Heaven')
Maturing at 12"-20" tall, Variegated Jacob's Ladder produces lavender-blue flowers late May thru June. But with a mound of distinctively decorative variegated foliage, who needs any flowers? Deer resistant.

A U.S. native, Black-Eyed Susan grows 36" - 48" high and blooms July thru September. The flowers are smaller than those of Rudbeckia hirta, but more numerous. Deer resistant and drought tolerant.

|'May Night' Sage (Salvia
nemorosa 'May Night')
'May Night' Sage grows to about 18" high and produces long lasting blue violet spikes May thru June. Easy to grow, this particular Sage is in high demand. Deer resistant and drought tolerant. Good pollinator plant, especially for bees.

|'Sky Dance'' Sage (Salvia
pratensis 'Sky Dance')
'Sky Dance' Sage grows to about 18"- 24" high and produces blue flower spikes June thru July. Easy to grow, it generally reblooms if dead-headed.. Deer resistant and drought tolerant. Good pollinator plant, especially for bees.

(Sedum spectabile 'Autumn Joy')
Probably the most well known Sedum, 'Autumn Joy' grows 18" - 30" tall and produces huge mauve-pink heads in late August. As the autumn season progresses, the flowers turn to a rusty mahogany color. Easy to grow and like most Sedums, deer resistant and tolerant of heat and drought. Attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds for nectaring.

'Meteor' Sedum grows 15" - 20" high and produces large heads of unique pinkish-lavender flowers for a few weeks in late summer. Its succulent foliage is grayish-green. Sedum 'Meteor' does attract numerous species for nectaring in our butterfly garden. Deer resistant and drought tolerant. Attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds for nectaring.

|Carolina Lupine (a.k.a.
Carolina Lupine grows 18"-24" high and produces yellow flower spikes May thru June. Easy to grow. Plant in full sun or part shade.

(Verbascum phoeniceum 'Violetta'')
Growing 24"-36" high, 'Violetta' Verbascum sports purple-violet flowers over mounds of leafy green foliage. It usually blooms May thru June, and often reblooms if spent flowers are removed.
