A fantastic way to get jaw-dropping fall color! Kodiak Orange diervilla (Diervilla sp.) is a selection of our North American native diervilla that exhibits extraordinary color, from the time the foliage starts to emerge in spring until the last blazing leaf drops in autumn. Look for pretty orange hues in the new growth all season, accompanied by an abundance of yellow trumpet flowers in summer. Fall is when it really shines, with a lit-from-within look at adds the perfect touch to your pollinator plantings. The flowers attract a number of pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds, and the foliage hosts the caterpillars of hummingbird moths.

Check out the other colors in the Kodiak diervilla series here.

Vital details:

Plant size: 3-4' tall and wide

Light: full sun (6+ hrs/day), part sun. Grows in a good amount of shade, but not as colorful, and flowering is diminished.

Water: Average moisture

Hardiness: USDA zone 4-7 (Find your hardiness zone)

Pollinator value: flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators; leaves host the larvae of hummingbird moths.

Notable features: drought tolerant, long blooming, native.

Care notes: Overall, this durable plant needs little pruning, but can be trimmed as needed. Major pruning is best done in spring. We have found that deer may eat this plant but rarely cause any significant or disfiguring damage, and it always seems to rebound quickly.

It died

It came in as a pretty small plant and never grew. Now its completely dead. I also got another variety, the black one, which is healthy and strong in the same garden bed, so hopefully just a fluke
