Showy Pink Evening Primrose (Oenothera speciosa) is 1-2 inch 4 petaled pink cup-shaped flowers with pink to red veins. It spreads by stoloniferous rootstocks and seeds forming a groundcover. The large flowers are cup-shaped and showy, usually opening in the evening or cloudy days although in some areas of the county they open during the day. Butterflies and bees are attracted to the nectar in the flowers. Members of the genus Oenothera support the following specialized bees: Melissodes (Apomelissodes) fimbriatus and Lasioglossum (Sphecodogastra) oenotherae. Seeds attract birds and small mammals.

Oenothera is a genus of about 145 species of herbaceous flowering plants native to the Americas. It is the type genus of the family Onagraceae. The genus Oenothera may have originated in Mexico and Central America, and spread farther north in North America and into South America. Common names include evening primrose, suncups, and sundrops. They are not closely related to the true primroses (genus Primula). The flowers of many species open in the evening, hence the name "evening primrose".

After your plants have arrived:

The plants in this box have just spent a lot of time being jostled around in the dark and must be unboxed right away. Unpack the entire box, removing packaging material and plants. Remove any plastic covering the pot and/or soil surface and check if the soil is dry. Water anything that is dry or looks wilted. Any plants that have come unpotted during shipping can be replaced in their pots and their roots covered with soil.

Place plants in a cool, shaded spot out of direct sunlight for 24- 48 hours after unpacking them. This allows them a recovery and acclimation period before planting. If you must hold them longer, place them out of direct sunlight, wind, heat, and cold. Check daily for watering.

Shortages/Damages

Refunds

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness – how much winter cold a plant can withstand. The Mexican evening primroses are in an area with others of their kind and are growing very well. I can hardly wait to see them spread and flower prolifically each morning. They surround a large cholla cactus with brazen magenta flowers at this time. Thank you for sending such robust and large plants--they truly hold their own with the cholla.
