Plant Size Info

Looking for something a little different for your butterfly garden? You’ve just found it! Sweet Emotion abelia is a very special shrub indeed. It’s unlike any other abelia for two reasons: one, it’s extremely hardy, thriving even in chilly USDA zone 4. And second, it blooms in spring with the most amazing jasmine fragrance. The plant was originally collected in Latvia several decades ago, and the plant geeks at Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs worked with it to bring out the bright pink in the flower buds, as well as a slightly smaller, more refined habit than the original.

The abundant flowers serve as a welcome meal for butterflies emerging from dormancy in spring, and swallowtail butterflies are especially attracted to it. It makes a fantastic specimen or hedge plant, in your butterfly garden or anywhere in your landscape.

Care & Planting Guide

After your plants have arrived:

The plants in this box have just spent a lot of time being jostled around in the dark and must be unboxed right away. Unpack the entire box, removing packaging material and plants. Remove any plastic covering the pot and/or soil surface and check if the soil is dry. Water anything that is dry or looks wilted. Any plants that have come unpotted during shipping can be replaced in their pots and their roots covered with soil.

Place plants in a cool, shaded spot out of direct sunlight for 24- 48 hours after unpacking them. This allows them a recovery and acclimation period before planting. If you must hold them longer, place them out of direct sunlight, wind, heat, and cold. Check daily for watering.

USDA Hardiness Zones

USDA Hardiness Zones Map

ZONE HARDINESS

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness – how much winter cold a plant can withstand. The Hardiness Zone Map system divides the United States and Canada into numbered zones based on lowest average winter temperature. Even within a zone, different micro-climates exist, such as large urban areas which may be warmer or land situated at different elevations.

WHAT EFFECTS PLANT HARDINESS

The Hardiness Zone Map is a valuable tool but it is not foolproof. There are a variety of factors that can influence the hardiness of a given plant in a garden. These factors include: soil type, drainage, snow cover, exposure to wind, winter, rainfall (or lack of), as well as fluctuations in temperature.

Not growing

Everything else is doing wonderfully, but sweet emotion is not doing well at all. I have no idea what to do. I have fed, watered, mulched, etc. Nothing helps.

Hello! Thank you for leaving feedback. When transplanting young plants from a nursery pot to a garden, the plant allocates more energy to root development instead of shoot development (above ground). It's important for them to develop a robust root system so they can absorb the nutrients and water in the soil around them. Then after their root system is more developed, they'll invest in their shoots and flower development. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, in the second year, they have more energy to put into growth; and in the third year, they grow and flower vigorously. This applies to plants in the garden center and plants you purchase online. We hope this helps. Happy Gardening!
