Looking for something a little different that's still super tough and durable and attracts pollinators? Try Proud Berry coralberry (Symphoricarpos sp.). This extremely hardy, deer resistant, shade tolerant flowering shrub graces your garden with neat little round leaves of a versatile, appealing blue-green hue. In late summer, it develops waxy little bell-shaped flowers that expand and then turn into bubble-like pink berries for autumn. It's an unusual color, an unusual berry, and sure to get all sorts of attention in the garden - and not just from people: the caterpillars of the snowberry clearwing, a beautiful hummingbird moth, feed on the foliage.

Proud Berry coralberry from Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs makes an ideal specimen, hedge, or landscaping plant. We recommend that you prune it back by about half its total size each spring to keep it dense, compact, and looking its best. Also makes a very nice cut branch for flower arrangements!

Care & Planting Guide

After your plants have arrived:

The plants in this box have just spent a lot of time being jostled around in the dark and must be unboxed right away. Unpack the entire box, removing packaging material and plants. Remove any plastic covering the pot and/or soil surface and check if the soil is dry. Water anything that is dry or looks wilted. Any plants that have come unpotted during shipping can be replaced in their pots and their roots covered with soil.

Place plants in a cool, shaded spot out of direct sunlight for 24- 48 hours after unpacking them. This allows them a recovery and acclimation period before planting. If you must hold them longer, place them out of direct sunlight, wind, heat, and cold. Check daily for watering.

USDA Hardiness Zones

USDA Hardiness Zones Map

ZONE HARDINESS

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness – how much winter cold a plant can withstand. The Hardiness Zone Map system divides the United States and Canada into numbered zones based on lowest average winter temperature. Even within a zone, different micro-climates exist, such as large urban areas which may be warmer or land situated at different elevations.

WHAT EFFECTS PLANT HARDINESS

The Hardiness Zone Map is a valuable tool but it is not foolproof. There are a variety of factors that can influence the hardiness of a given plant in a garden. These factors include: soil type, drainage, snow cover, exposure to wind, winter, rainfall (or lack of), as well as fluctuations in temperature.

This plant is something I've admired for years

When I saw this plant on here I had to get it. I've admired this plant for years driving through the neighborhood. I ordered 8 nice looking plants from here and this one was slightly shocked. I could tell it was a little more delicate than the others varieties. I got it in the ground right away in the right location and it perked right up. I would suggest ordering this one when the weather isn't too hot. I got mine when it was about 77 degrees out and its been staying in the high 70's low 80's during the day. I think it was great weather to start this one. The key to ordering plants is not just getting it from a good place but also weather.

Finally!

I first heard about this coralberry from Laura on Garden Answer but could not find it anywhere in my area. I’m happy I could purchase it from you folks. It was much smaller than I expected but it is healthy and will grow.

This adorable bush arrived in good health. I couldn’t plant it right away but it held up just fine for over a week until I could get it in its spot in my garden. It’s doing well and looking great!!
