Rue (Ruta graveolens) is a charming perennial with aromatic, fern-like leaves and clusters of yellow flowers. Evergreen foliage takes on blue-green hues and releases a sweet and spicy fragrance when touched. Though it blooms with small yellow flowers in early summer, Rue is valued for its foliage. It serves as a host plant for swallowtail butterflies, including the black swallowtail, giant swallowtail, and anise swallowtail. You can find adult butterflies laying eggs on the leaves, then enjoy watching the caterpillars grow through the season. It may not be as showy as other pollinator plants, but it's just as important to include it in your garden!

After your plants have arrived:

The plants in this box have just spent a lot of time being jostled around in the dark and must be unboxed right away. Unpack the entire box, removing packaging material and plants. Remove any plastic covering the pot and/or soil surface and check if the soil is dry. Water anything that is dry or looks wilted. Any plants that have come unpotted during shipping can be replaced in their pots and their roots covered with soil.

Place plants in a cool, shaded spot out of direct sunlight for 24- 48 hours after unpacking them. This allows them a recovery and acclimation period before planting. If you must hold them longer, place them out of direct sunlight, wind, heat, and cold. Check daily for watering.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness – how much winter cold a plant can withstand. It hasn't settled in yet.

I am between zone 4-5b and we planted the rue in full sun in a very stable mature bed. It started out with a few yellowing leaves and it has not settled in yet. It has been a month and it still looks like it did when we planted it. There has been no growth or dying off, it is exactly the same size it was when it came out of the box. We buy a lot of plants on line and GreatGardenPlants has a very good track record with us. Their shipping and packing is excellent.

We have not given up hope and we want to give the rue it a few more weeks. It looks fine, but it hasn't "taken" to the earth in any noticeable way. One of nature's little mysteries.
