'Hello Yellow' Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) is the perfect way to welcome pollinators to the garden. Showy clusters of bright yellow flowers are loaded with fragrance and nectar, serving as a beacon for butterflies. This long-blooming native keeps flowering all summer, providing nearly 3 months of blooms. Flowers give way to showy milkweed seed pods that birds love. The best part? Unlike other milkweeds, this variety doesn't exude a milky sap from the stems. Try using the fresh flowers and seed pots in cut arrangements!

Milkweeds, including 'Hello Yellow' Milkweed, are essential for the Monarch lifecycle. Their relationship includes more than just swapping nectar for pollination. Caterpillars exclusively feed on their leaves, which are filled with cardenolides. Cardenolides are stored in the bodies of Monarch caterpillars and butterflies as a defense against predators. Without Milkweed, we wouldn't have Monarchs!

FAQs

Care & Planting Guide

After your plants have arrived:

The plants in this box have just spent a lot of time being jostled around in the dark and must be unboxed right away. Unpack the entire box, removing packaging material and plants. Remove any plastic covering the pot and/or soil surface and check if the soil is dry. Water anything that is dry or looks wilted. Any plants that have come unpotted during shipping can be replaced in their pots and their roots covered with soil.

Place plants in a cool, shaded spot out of direct sunlight for 24- 48 hours after unpacking them. This allows them a recovery and acclimation period before planting. If you must hold them longer, place them out of direct sunlight, wind, heat, and cold. Check daily for watering.

USDA Hardiness Zones

USDA Hardiness Zones Map

ZONE HARDINESS

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness – how much winter cold a plant can withstand. The Hardiness Zone Map system divides the United States and Canada into numbered zones based on lowest average winter temperature. Even within a zone, different micro-climates exist, such as large urban areas which may be warmer or land situated at different elevations.

WHAT EFFECTS PLANT HARDINESS

The Hardiness Zone Map is a valuable tool but it is not foolproof. There are a variety of factors that can influence the hardiness of a given plant in a garden. These factors include: soil type, drainage, snow cover, exposure to wind, winter, rainfall (or lack of), as well as fluctuations in temperature.

Half arrived poor condition- but they made it right

I guess I know better than ordering in the summer months to Waxhaw-have the plants looked pretty dead, but I did revive at least a branch on the two that were very poor. The other two were weak, but they made it. But when I did a previous review about how unhappy I was with a condition, they gave me a refund and then a nice long letter helping me on how to work with the remaining plants and it was very caring and knowledgeable and I really appreciate it. so between the refund and their efforts and helping me understand how best to go forward with my plants that are still alive from here. I think they’re very standup company and I will in fact be comfortable ordering from them in the future.

Hello! We’re sorry that you received plants that are not up to our standards. We try our best to provide excellent plants, but some factors, like shipping and handling, are outside our control. That’s why we have a 60-day guarantee on all of our orders. Please email your order number and pictures of your plants to claims@greatgardenplants.com to start the claims process. We look forward to helping! https://bit.ly/ggp-guarantee

Mostly dead

Two milkweed and 1 lavender plant arrived. Much smaller than expected and in mediocre condition. I repotted each and followed instructions. Only one of the milkweed has new growth after original looked pretty bleak. Lavender is completely gone but I'm hopeful. Wish I had not ordered. Local nursery would have been better!

Thank you for your feedback! It’s surprisingly normal for newly transplanted plants to appear like they aren’t growing. That’s because most of the growth occurs below ground in their first year as they allocate more energy to root development. Once your plant is established, it will start investing more in shoot and flower development. To learn more about how plants “sleep, creep, and leap”, read our FAQ here: https://bit.ly/FAQ-plant-growth Our fall guarantee covers plants received after September 1 until May 2025, so we have you covered. Please send your order number and pictures of your plants to claims@greatgardenplants.com to start the claims process if necessary. We look forward to helping! https://bit.ly/ggp-guarantee
