Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium) may look like it belongs in the dry southwest, but it actually grows in the prairies and meadows of the Eastern US! This perennial boasts small white flowers that are packed together in a globe. The result is a perfectly circular bloom that is bursting with texture! Each flowerhead has over 100 flowers packed together, and each stalk can have up to 40 flowerheads on it, making this truly a feast for pollinators.

The flowers may not be the showiest, but that's because they don't need to be. Pollinators already adore Rattlesnake Master - no colorful petals required. They attract a variety of bees, butterflies, moths, and even beetles. It serves as a host plant for the nearly endangered Eryngium Stem-Borer Moth. Try planting it with echinaceas for an incredible floral display!

Care & Planting Guide

After your plants have arrived:

The plants in this box have just spent a lot of time being jostled around in the dark and must be unboxed right away. Unpack the entire box, removing packaging material and plants. Remove any plastic covering the pot and/or soil surface and check if the soil is dry. Water anything that is dry or looks wilted. Any plants that have come unpotted during shipping can be replaced in their pots and their roots covered with soil.

Place plants in a cool, shaded spot out of direct sunlight for 24- 48 hours after unpacking them. This allows them a recovery and acclimation period before planting. If you must hold them longer, place them out of direct sunlight, wind, heat, and cold. Check daily for watering.

USDA Hardiness Zones

USDA Hardiness Zones Map

ZONE HARDINESS

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness – how much winter cold a plant can withstand. The Hardiness Zone Map system divides the United States and Canada into numbered zones based on lowest average winter temperature. Even within a zone, different micro-climates exist, such as large urban areas which may be warmer or land situated at different elevations.

WHAT EFFECTS PLANT HARDINESS

The Hardiness Zone Map is a valuable tool but it is not foolproof. There are a variety of factors that can influence the hardiness of a given plant in a garden. These factors include: soil type, drainage, snow cover, exposure to wind, winter, rainfall (or lack of), as well as fluctuations in temperature.

Healthy Plants Adapted Quickly

The Eryngium yuccifolium (Rattlesnake Master) from Butterfly Bushes were healthy and read to plant. They found a ready home in my pollinator garden. We look forward to watching pollinators enjoy its flowers then using the dried stalks in floral arrangements. Highly recommended.
