Vibrant red and yellow viburnum foliage with purple berries in the fall

While the summer garden brings buzzing pollinator activity and vibrant blooms, there's something so magical about fall and winter gardens. From bright berries adorning every stem to fiery fall foliage lighting up the landscape, the fall and winter season has so many beautiful elements to appreciate. Here, we'll spotlight some of our favorite native shrubs with interesting foliage, berries, flowers, and more during the fall and winter. Not only do these shrubs look good, but they also attract birds to the garden and provide shelter to native wildlife.

Bright red dogwood stems in a winter garden

Dogwood (Cornus sericea)

Dogwood feature attractive foliage and flowers that attract pollinators during spring and summer. Then, as the seasons change to fall and winter, the striking red or yellow stems take center stage. These can be cut and look great in holiday arrangements! This native shrub is ideal for a hedge or backdrop in your landscape; it can even be grown as a specimen. We particularly like them when they are sited against a pine or other evergreen or a wall—this really sets them off nicely in the winter landscape.

Bright pink berries with frosty green foliage from coralberry plants

Coralberry (Symphoricarpos)

Coralberry is a hardy, deer-resistant, and shade-tolerant flowering shrub that graces your garden with neat little round leaves of a versatile, appealing blue-green hue. In late summer, it develops waxy, little bell-shaped flowers that expand and then turn into bubble-like pink berries for autumn. It's an unusual color, an unusual berry, and sure to get all sorts of attention in the garden - and not just from people: the caterpillars of the snowberry clearwing, a beautiful hummingbird moth, feed on the foliage, and birds love to feast on the berries.

Vibrant orange/red diervilla foliage

Diervilla

Diervilla is a native shrub often used to line pathways and garden borders, with vibrant, healthy foliage from summer through fall. The summer flowers are covered with pollinators, especially bumblebees, and in the fall, the foliage takes on a lit-from-within look, adding the perfect touch to your pollinator plantings. As a bonus for your local pollinators, this easy-care shrub is also a host plant for the Laurel Sphinx moth, Snowberry clearwing, and several other moth species.

Aronia

Are you searching for a low-growing native shrub with orange-red fall foliage and lavish berries? Look no further than aronia, otherwise known as chokeberry. The show begins in spring, when the shrub is enveloped in a profusion of fragrant white flowers, attracting a flurry of pollinators, including native bees and Hairstreak butterflies. As the seasons progress, these self-pollinating flowers give way to an abundance of vibrant red berries, adding a splash of color to the landscape and attracting birds.

Red buttonbush flowers in the fall

Buttonbush (Cephalanthus)

The unique spherical flowers from buttonbush will charm pollinators and garden-goers alike! After the flowers fade in late summer, they leave behind bright red fruits with seeded nutlets that bring the fall color and feed birds and native wildlife. The glossy foliage keeps it eye-catching beyond its summer bloom time all the way to the first frost. Buttonbush is durable and grows well in moist, even wet soils, making it an excellent choice for boggy areas. Plant on its own as a commanding specimen, or group together as a hedge or backdrop to your pollinator garden.

Clusters of bright red and blue berries from viburnum plants

Witherod Viburnum (Viburnum nudum)

Witherod viburnum offers multiple seasons of interest in the garden, from spring flowers that feed bees to fall berries that attract birds. After blooming in the spring, these flowers develop into green berries that turn luminous ivory as summer progresses. By early fall, they begin to flush bright pink and ripen to blue-purple, creating a mixed color effect that becomes more stunning when the foliage turns bright red. Most witherod viburnum varieties will need a male pollinator to produce berries, but Brandywine™ witherod viburnum requires no male pollinator to produce berries.

Bright yellow summersweet foliage during the fall

Summersweet (Clethra)

Summersweet is a native shrub that is filled with fragrance and fabulous fall color! In summer, summersweet is covered in white flower spikes that emit the most delicious scent, attracting bees and swallowtail butterflies in droves. Come fall, its glossy green foliage turns an unforgettable bright yellow, lighting up the landscape. This native shrub is also deer-resistant, shade-tolerant, and grows well in wet soils, making it an excellent choice for adding fall color along streams or in woodland areas with moist soil.
