Help about your size

Every garden needs its share of pollinator plants that you needn't lift so much as a finger to enjoy at their best, and Kodiak Red diervilla is one such plant. This North American native boasts neatly arranged leaves, each one directly opposite its neighbor, and a constant smattering of cute yellow flowers in summer. They attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, and the leaves host hummingbird moth caterpillars. New growth emerges with a flush of red, and come autumn, the whole plant goes a brilliant purple-red that is the perfect send-off to the season.

All of the Kodiak diervillas are perfect for a variety of landscaping applications, from hedges to backdrops to specimens - they can even be intermixed among your pollinator perennials!

Care & Planting Guide

After your plants have arrived:

The plants in this box have just spent a lot of time being jostled around in the dark and must be unboxed right away. Unpack the entire box, removing packaging material and plants. Remove any plastic covering the pot and/or soil surface and check if the soil is dry. Water anything that is dry or looks wilted. Any plants that have come unpotted during shipping can be replaced in their pots and their roots covered with soil.

Place plants in a cool, shaded spot out of direct sunlight for 24- 48 hours after unpacking them. This allows them a recovery and acclimation period before planting. If you must hold them longer, place them out of direct sunlight, wind, heat, and cold. Check daily for watering.

USDA Hardiness Zones

USDA Hardiness Zones Map

ZONE HARDINESS

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness – how much winter cold a plant can withstand. The Hardiness Zone Map system divides the United States and Canada into numbered zones based on lowest average winter temperature. Even within a zone, different micro-climates exist, such as large urban areas which may be warmer or land situated at different elevations.

WHAT EFFECTS PLANT HARDINESS

The Hardiness Zone Map is a valuable tool but it is not foolproof. There are a variety of factors that can influence the hardiness of a given plant in a garden. These factors include: soil type, drainage, snow cover, exposure to wind, winter, rainfall (or lack of), as well as fluctuations in temperature.

This is a very happy plant!

I've ordered Diervilla from another (well respected) supplier over the past year, so I have a good basis for comparison, and this is the clear winner. I have a Red, an Orange and a Kodiak Fresh, and they're all doing very well. The Kodiak Fresh came through a rough Montana winter with flying colors, and the new red and orange ones are growing like crazy. Very pleased, Now I need to find a space for a Black one.

Very happy with these!

Plants arrived this Fall very healthy with excellent root systems, and were a nice size. They showed no shock at all with planting nor since. I’m excited to see what they do next year with the flowers and whether they’ll turn red (the spot I planted 5 of them is mostly shade).

Hopeful.

Might be deer resistant but deer still chewed on it. So far it's still alive. I bought a small container so it's still small thanks to the deer pruning. But I'm hopeful it continues to grow.
