Discontinued - We no longer offer this product. Create a similar look with Swamp Milkweed - Asclepias incarnata.

With large clusters of spikey pink flowers, Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) really lives up to the name! Pale pink, star-shaped flowers are arranged in globe-like clusters, blooming on top of upright stems. The blooms are heavily laden with fragrance and nectar, attracting a wide variety of pollinators to the garden. In the fall, flowers give way to large seed pods that are filled with fluffy, wind-dispersed seeds.  Showy Milkweed isn't quite as aggressive as others, making it easy to control in the garden.

Milkweeds, including Showy Milkweed, are essential for the Monarch lifecycle. Their relationship includes more than just swapping nectar for pollination. Caterpillars exclusively feed on their leaves, which are filled with cardenolides. Cardenolides are stored in the bodies of Monarch caterpillars and butterflies as a defense against predators. Without Milkweed, we wouldn't have Monarchs!

Care & Planting Guide

After your plants have arrived:

The plants in this box have just spent a lot of time being jostled around in the dark and must be unboxed right away. Unpack the entire box, removing packaging material and plants. Remove any plastic covering the pot and/or soil surface and check if the soil is dry. Water anything that is dry or looks wilted. Any plants that have come unpotted during shipping can be replaced in their pots and their roots covered with soil.

Place plants in a cool, shaded spot out of direct sunlight for 24- 48 hours after unpacking them. This allows them a recovery and acclimation period before planting. If you must hold them longer, place them out of direct sunlight, wind, heat, and cold. Check daily for watering.

USDA Hardiness Zones

USDA Hardiness Zones Map

ZONE HARDINESS

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness – how much winter cold a plant can withstand. The Hardiness Zone Map system divides the United States and Canada into numbered zones based on lowest average winter temperature. Even within a zone, different micro-climates exist, such as large urban areas which may be warmer or land situated at different elevations.

WHAT EFFECTS PLANT HARDINESS

The Hardiness Zone Map is a valuable tool but it is not foolproof. There are a variety of factors that can influence the hardiness of a given plant in a garden. These factors include: soil type, drainage, snow cover, exposure to wind, winter, rainfall (or lack of), as well as fluctuations in temperature.

Really sad by these purchases

Of the original 9 plants I ordered I have two plants replaced twice - of those 2 only 1/2
Of the plant is doing well. Of the other 7 most have died after a very very brief time. I am submitting another request for exchange of flowers now.

Arrived puny, not growing in hest

Unfortunately these arrived very small and spindly and I think the lack of robustness plus the hot summer is slowing them down and making them suffer.

Hello! Thank you for your feedback. As mentioned on our website we do ship young plants with established root systems. It is hard to say for certain why you are not seeing growth as quickly as you'd like since many factors like weather, soil type, watering, and fertilizing all play a role. Perhaps you're familiar with the old saying about plants: first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. This applies to plants in the garden center as well as plants you purchase online. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, the second year they have more energy to put into growth, and the third year, they are growing and flowering vigorously. With proper care, you will see growth in time. Happy Gardening!
